    What you’ll do:

    Under the supervision of the Vice President of Philanthropy, and in partnership with the Assistant Director of Estate and Gift Planning, the Senior Director will be an essential partner in supporting the mission of San Diego Humane Society, including the following:

    Donor Engagement

  • Act as primary point of contact in working with individuals who indicate an interest in planned giving, either in response to our marketing efforts or other direct response mechanisms, or through individual conversations with Senior Director or other fundraising team members.

  • Develop and implement prospect identification, engagement and solicitation strategies for planned giving donors who are major gift donors/prospects. Maintain regular, effective contact with donors through various activities and communications.

  • Support and partner with Philanthropy colleagues to secure planned gifts by providing technical expertise, opportunities and proposal language, participating in prospect meetings as appropriate and integrating planned giving into fundraising activities.

  • Develop and maintain a robust annual plan of stewardship and engagement that celebrates estate donors.

    Estate Administration

  • Oversee the collection, administration and allocation of realized testamentary gifts to the organization — e.g. gifts by will or trust, retirement funds, payable on death accounts and life insurance.

  • Monitor administration of trusts and estates to ensure San Diego Humane Society’s interests are protected.

  • Work directly with executors, trustees and other fiduciary/financial custodians, as well as internal organizational partners, to receive the full value of estate gifts in a timely and efficient manner and ensure against mismanagement.

    Leadership and Marketing

  • Directly supervise the Assistant Director of Estate and Gift Planning with an emphasis on supporting the incumbent’s growth and success.

  • Lead multi-channel marketing plan of planned giving vehicles to donor database and community at-large.

  • Participate in and bring leadership to strategy discussions around fundraising initiatives. Maintain professional development, keep abreast of planned giving trends and related legislation, and provide regular updates to colleagues.

  • Develop/maintain program budget.

    What we’re looking for:

  • A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in frontline and/or planned giving fundraising, or as an estate planning attorneyORany equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • Must have significant, demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or both of the following:

  • Planned giving vehicles, including charitable gift annuities, real estate and other tangible properties, charitable remainder and lead trusts, testamentary trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and retained life estates.

  • Working directly with individual donors to develop relationships on behalf of the institution and secure greater levels of generosity. Includes considerable judgment in the preparation, management and development of fundraising proposals, and d emonstrated success in implementing prospect strategies to secure both current and deferred gifts.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and presentation skills with the ability to represent San Diego Humane Society’s mission and interest to diverse groups of individuals.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.

    The successful candidate will be someone who thrives on being a part of a team that values excellence, collaboration and a healthy work environment — and one with a large, engaged community of donors. We are open to hiring a strong fundraiser and supporting them to earn their certification as a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPGCM), or to hiring an estate planning specialist and supporting their training in fundraising.

    Location:Based at our San Diego Campus. After initial onboarding and per Senior Director preferences, this position may work in a hybrid office/work-from-home model or may work from the on-site office full time. Regular automobile travel is required during workdays.

    Pay:The starting range is between $100,000 – $140,000 per year. The actual starting salary is determined by your related education and experience.
