Job Summary

The Actuarial Intern supports the actuarial function. The Actuarial Intern is exposed to a wide variety of actuarial functions including assisting with financial reporting estimates, rate setting, and adhoc cost analysis. The internship gives the candidate insight into what an Actuary role could look like at a health plan.

Duties

Learn about L.A. Care's various lines of business and how they operate (15%).

Learn what the Actuarial Services teams assists on at a health plan. Develop an understanding of Actuaries roles and responsibilities including Incurred but not Paid (IBNP) reporting, risk sharing estimates, and rate setting (15%).

Develop technical skills (SQL, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote) (15%).

Review revenue rate (premium) worksheets from California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), or other government agencies which provide L.A. Care's health care cost related revenue. Review assumptions and calculations of the government's Actuarial consultants (20%).

Duties Continued

Help analyze healthcare costs and trends (15%).

Assist other Actuarial team members in validating and peer reviewing their work (10%).

Perform other duties as assigned (10%).

Education Required

Working towards Bachelors Degree in Actuarial Science or Related Field

Required:

No experience required.

Completion of at least 1 actuarial exam.

Skills

Required:

Must be able to create and manage complex Excel spreadsheets.

Must have solid and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
